President Report AGM 2021-2022 Kia ora Koutou katoa & Talofa
Before I start, I would like to acknowledge Melissa Brealey -Tipene our past president for the last 3 years taking our Papakura club to the community through networking creating strong relationships with Papakura Marae, Kura connect, E tu Whanau and many others and focusing on family values. I remember when she first took the relay baton in 2018, I knew her heart was in the right place for our club her husband Joe and their kids have worked hard to get the club where it is. However, I know they would both agree it does take a village never an individual. So again, Thankyou Mel & Joe and committee.
The 2021- 2022 season another eventful year but challenging at the same time for our Papakura Athletic and Harrier Club ( PAHC) To my awesome family who supported me taking on the title as acting President I knew it was going to be a roller coaster and as a club we cannot please everyone. I was thankful I had their shoulders that I could lean on when the going got tough. One of the most challenging seasons by far for any club in regard to sports participation and seeing a division within NZ.
Covid -19 and lockdowns and Vaccinations throughout Auckland and the rest of the country we knew we had to keep within our guidelines set by Sports NZ filtered down to NZ Athletics and back to our clubs.
We expected registered numbers to drop as expected across all clubs in Auckland there was a decrease of 20% however our PAHC TRAIN kept moving first up was our Virtual Family 3km walks which we collaborated with purple pride Papatoetoe and later we opened up to our other Counties clubs. “We thought it was important to engage and help motivate them to try something different. Originally, we thought of an individual walk, but then we thought why don’t we form a family walk to also get the parents and siblings involved. This offered a chance for everyone in the family to get out in the fresh air andenjoy some quality time together.
“After the 3km week we thought why not invite our brothers and sisters from the other clubs across Counties Manukau. ” The families were asked to complete the walk within a 12-hour period and take a screen shot of their distance covered. They then took a family selfie, placed a comment on the events page and tagged in their club. Spot prizes were also offered. In total more than 55 South Auckland families completed the challenge, totally around 200 people. “We knew because kids (in Auckland) are currently unable to do organized sport making that community connection was important. It was uplifting to see all those smiles on every family member who participated.”
Next on the list was our Ron Keat day as a small committee we knew it would be too much of a challenge if we had to hold an event at our very own Massey Park. Strict guidelines of 50 only including coaches and marshals we would be looking at different times and ages so since our family 3km virtual walks was a success we decided to make RON KEAT DAY a virtual event as well. How it worked we would deliver our very own Ron keat ribbons to all clubs who were interested, and they decided what events they wanted to compete in. Clubs that participated were Pakuranga, Hillsborough, Waiuku, Papatoetoe, Owairaka, Lynndale, Takapuna, Brent bookers group we had close to 250 ,participants compete and all received a Ron keat ribbon we also had a flood of photos come through on our facebook page from all clubs.
They all received a certificate and a box of chocolates from our PAHC CLUB. It was amazing to see that through Covid all clubs got together to form something special which was supporting our Next Generation of kids at this time. The next day we had Rob Ward famous scavenger hunt at Botanic gardens which was another success we had a few clubs & their families looking for clues on a sunny day while getting their fitness in. Club night started off with Coaching sessions on Saturday opening up to our little, tiny tots with obstacle courses enjoying a jump and throw element at the same time.
Our club nights on weds were organized by our young coaches Jade, Avah, Evie, Mile and Master coach Rob, Taking registrations and ticking off families as they walk in is never easy Sonia Mehana and her family devoted so much time making sure we had the right numbers and we didn't over also taking vaccination passesand QR codes scanning as well. Thankyou!
We had closed to 40+ new members join our club on top of our existing numbers from age 5-14 and a few seniors as well we will continue to provide Athletics whether your Running, Jumping, or Throwing for our kids at our club. And may it long continue as I always mentioned previous as a club we cannot move forward without the help of our parents supporting not my club but "OUR" club. Whether you have helped at a club night or at a major event or maybe admin work a big THANKYOU!! You haven't gone unnoticed.
Last but not least Thankyou to NZ Athletics & North Foundation and families at our club who has also contributed towards our Prizegiving Flow Electrical & Kesla Transport. Community outreach CLM (Jeza Cark & Jamie Archibald) & SAS Sports for spot prizes and Parent volunteer Cam who is looking at restoring our clubrooms again.
Thank you to all of the volunteer club officials, managers and coaches for the countless hours you dedicate to the running of the clubs that are the backbone of our sport. To our PAHC Treasurer Vaughan you have been a great support in helping with decisions for our club moving forward to the next stage your contribution to the club you cannot put a price on it. Appreciate it! Before we go to our amazing results from our PAHC Athletes we have made a good start to our cross-country season having close to 30-40 kids turn up to enjoy a run at our local grounds Bruce Pulman Park. For now, we call it a PAHC rebuild stage.
